USA Programmes

Trainee Programs
Internship NZ offers two distinct programmes for USA trainee applicants: Internship (INT) USA for students and Professional Career Training (PCT) USA for graduates and/or working professionals. Both programmes make it possible for international participants to find training in their field of study and explore life in the United States with maximum freedom and at minimum cost. The programmes permit you to work for up to 18 months in an approved training program.

Internship NZ and CIEE will help you to prepare for your experience and obtain all the necessary work documents as well as provide supervision and emergency backup service during the programme.

Definition and Purpose of Programmes

Our Internship USA and Professional Career Training USA programmes are designated by the State Department under the Trainee category of exchange visitor programmes. These programmes enable students and professionals to undertake up to 18 months career-related practical training in the U.S.

What is Included

CIEE will provide:

  • A comprehensive and regularly updated web site www.councilexchanges.org providing information on finding jobs and living in the US.
  • 24 hour emergency support from CIEE

  • Comprehensive health and accident insurance in accordance with US Government requirements.

  • The DS-2019 certificate of eligibility to undertake training in the US required for the J-1 visa.

Although the training takes place in the work place, the programme does not allow participants to simply work in the U.S. (replace a regular employee).

Casual or second jobs are not allowed. This includes volunteer positions.

CIEE cannot sponsor participants to work as the following:

  • Au pairs, maids or any other domestic work such as baby-sitting or housekeeping
  • Camp counselors

  • Medical trainees or anything involving hands-on therapy, counseling, administering treatment or making diagnoses of medical, psychiatric or psychological conditions
